Revenue analysis from your GA4 data

Find the biggest red or green number in your revenue, and start there

As an ecommerce or marketing manager, you have campaigns to run and ads to test, and little time left for analysis. Connect your GA4 and see how all your numbers fit together. Each box shows its change against last year, red if it fell and green if it rose, and the ones that feed into revenue add an estimate in money. The biggest is where to look first.

Sign in with Google → choose your GA4 account → find the biggest red or green number.
The sign-in is read-only. Your GA4 data lives only in your own browser. You need 13 months or more of GA4 history, and each sale in your store must be recorded the right way.

Another week of work aimed at a guess.

  • Another week of campaigns and ad tests that start from a guess about what matters most.
  • Another week of digging for the one number that matters, in between everything else.
  • Another week with too little time to look at the numbers at all.

Where do you look first, when every number is competing for your week?

GA4 shows each number by itself, even though the numbers belong together.

If you manage an ecommerce store, you have a store to run. If you manage marketing, you have ads to create and test and campaigns to follow up. Analysis gets whatever time is left.

Then you open GA4 and get a huge pile of numbers. Where do you even start? Nothing tells you which ones change your revenue, or how. Even when you find the right place to look, the real cause is hiding one more report down.

Numbers that belong together should not be scattered. You should not need to be an analyst to see which one matters, and you should not have to take an answer on faith.

The same numbers the way GA4 gives them to you: one report at a time. The same numbers, joined up. Each one comes from the one above it, so you can see what moves your revenue.
How all your numbers fit together
Revenue is split into how many orders came in and how big each order was. Orders are split again into visits and how many visits ended in a sale. Order size is split into how many items people bought and the price of each item. Every box is compared with the same time last year.
An estimate in money, where it applies
The boxes that feed into revenue also show an estimate of the money their change against last year is worth. Each is worked out on its own, so read the amounts side by side rather than adding them up.
You can check every number
Each number comes from a calculation, and the app shows you the formula. You can do the math yourself.

How to read it: start with the biggest red or green number, then follow it down.

Find the biggest red or green number
In the app, each box shows its change against last year, red if it fell and green if it rose. The boxes that feed into revenue also show an estimate of the money that change is worth. Start with the biggest number, in money where a box shows one. In the example answer at the top of this page it is the share of visits that ended in a sale, worth €206,500.
Follow it down
Go from that box to the funnel step where it happens, then to the products behind it.
See who should look at it
Each product row names who should look first, marketing, conversion or pricing, and what to check.

It works the same when revenue is up or flat. Use it to choose where to look first. A big red box may be seasonal or out of your hands, and a big green one shows what worked. It is not a promise of what can be won back, and it does not say what to fix.

  2. Choose your GA4 account

Pick the website or app you want to look at.

  3. Find the biggest red or green number

Your revenue is split into the parts that make it up. Each box is red if it fell against last year and green if it rose, and the ones that feed into revenue also show an estimate in money. Start with the biggest. The dashboard fills up as each month of data arrives.

You know where to look first, and why.

Ecommerce managers and marketing managers can open the picture, pick the biggest red or green number and say why they started there.

Before: A huge pile of numbers and no place to start.

After: One picture where the biggest gap in money is easy to see.

Before: Revenue is down. Probably traffic.

After: Fewer people who click our ads on their phones are buying than last year. Here is how much money that costs us, and who should look at it.

Before: Revenue is up, and nobody can say why.

After: Most of the rise comes from the price of each item, not from more visits. Here is what each part is worth.

Before: A paragraph you have to trust.

After: A calculation you can check.

These words are just an example. They are not a real result.
